Frequently asked questions

Getting started

Who can join Amara?

Anyone aged 18 or over. We’re starting in Nigeria. You need a phone number, a Google account or an Apple account to sign up, and at least 3 clear photos of yourself. Verifying your face is optional and takes about 10 seconds.

How do I sign in?

Enter your phone number and we’ll text you a 6-digit code. The code works once and expires after 5 minutes; if it doesn’t arrive, you can ask for a new one after 60 seconds. You can also sign in with Google, or with Apple on iPhone. Never share your code with anyone. Amara staff will never ask for it.

Is Amara free?

Yes. Creating a profile, verifying, seeing profiles, liking (50 a day), matching and chatting are all free, and every member gets 1 free Super Like a week. Plus and Gold plans and packs of Roses, Boosts and Super Likes are optional extras.

Why can’t anyone see my profile?

Your profile is shown to other members only when all of these are true: you’ve finished setting up your profile, you have at least 3 approved photos, and your profile isn’t paused or hidden by our moderation team. You don’t need to verify your face to be seen, though verifying adds a badge to your profile. A new photo may take a short while to be approved. If you’ve paused your profile, unpause it in Settings.

What do the intents mean?

When you set up your profile, you choose what you’re looking for: Something serious (a committed relationship), Open to see (dating and seeing where it goes), Short-term fun (fun and casual) or New friends (meeting new people as friends). People with the same intent are shown to each other first, and you can choose which intents you want to see in your discovery settings. New friends and Short-term fun are only shown to each other if both people choose the other goal in their discovery settings. You can change your intent at any time.

Why did my match disappear?

A match ends if nobody writes within 7 days. We send a reminder 24 hours before. A match also ends if the other person unmatches you, blocks you, or deletes their account.

Safety

Why should I verify my face?

It’s optional, but it gets you a verified badge, so people know it’s really you. You take a short live video selfie in the app, about 10 seconds. We check that a live person is in front of the camera, then compare your face with your profile photos. We keep only the result and the scores, never the video or images. You can see people, like, match and chat whether or not you verify, and you can look out for the badge on other profiles.

My face verification didn’t work. What should I do?

Try again in good, even light, facing the camera, without sunglasses, a mask or a hat. Make sure your profile photos are recent and clearly show your face, because we compare your selfie with them. You can try up to 5 times a day. If it still doesn’t work, contact support.

How do I report or block someone?

On their profile, tap Report or Block at the top. In a chat, open the menu and choose Report or Block. You can report a profile, a photo or a message. Reporting also blocks them for you and keeps a copy of the conversation for our team. Blocking hides you from each other everywhere: discovery, likes and chat. You can see and undo blocks in Settings → Blocked people.

What happens after I report someone?

A person on our moderation team reviews every report. The most serious ones, such as someone who may be under 18 or threats of violence, are handled first, as quickly as we can. Depending on what happened, we may warn, restrict, suspend or ban the account. We’ll tell you when we’ve reviewed your report, but not what action we took. The person you reported isn’t told who reported them.

What is Share My Date?

Before you meet someone, go to Settings → Share my date. Add who you’re meeting, where and when, and the phone number of someone you trust. We text them the details of your plan. We store only the last 4 digits of their number, and we delete the plan 30 days after the date. You can share up to 5 plans a day.

Why can’t I send my phone number in chat?

Phone numbers, links, social handles and photos unlock once you’ve each sent 3 messages. Scammers often try to move people to another app straight away, so this short wait protects everyone. For the same reason, profiles can’t include phone numbers, links or handles at all.

Someone asked me for money. What should I do?

Don’t send it, whatever the reason: transport fare, airtime, an emergency or an investment. Report them with the reason “Asked me for money”. If you’ve already sent money, call your bank straight away and report it to the police or the EFCC. If you’re ever in danger, call 112 (or 767 in Lagos).

Payments

How much do Plus and Gold cost?

Plus and Gold come by the week, the month or 6 months. The price is always shown before you pay. Plus gives you unlimited likes, 5 Super Likes a week, Rewind, Travel mode (match in another city before you get there) and advanced filters. Gold adds See Who Likes You, read receipts and a free Boost every week.

What are Roses, Boosts and Super Likes?

A Rose is a like that stands out: the person can see who sent it even without Gold, and it can include a short note. A Boost puts your profile in front of more people for 30 minutes. A Super Like tells someone you’re especially interested. Packs come in 3 or 10 Roses, 1 or 5 Boosts and 5 or 15 Super Likes, and work on any plan. Your free weekly Super Likes are used before the ones you’ve bought.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Cancel where you subscribed. If the App Store or Google Play bills you, cancel in your Apple or Google account’s subscription settings; we can’t cancel those for you. If we bill you, go to Settings › Plan and purchases in the app. Either way, your plan stops renewing and lasts until the end of the period you’ve paid for.

Can I get a refund?

If you think you were charged in error or something went wrong, contact support and we’ll look into it. For App Store or Google Play purchases, refunds are handled by Apple or Google, so please ask them. When a refund is made, the plan ends straight away, or the items from the pack are removed.

What happens if a renewal payment fails?

If the App Store or Google Play bills you, the store handles the failed payment and tries again; update your payment details in your Apple or Google account. If we bill you, we let you know and your plan keeps working for 3 days. If the payment still hasn’t gone through by then, your plan ends.

Will my plan work on all my devices?

Yes. Your plan belongs to your Amara account, not your phone, so it works wherever you sign in, however you paid for it. If you get a new phone, sign in to the same account. For store purchases, you can also tap Restore purchases in Settings › Plan and purchases.

Your account

How do I take a break without deleting my account?

Go to Settings and tap Pause profile. You’ll be hidden from discovery, but you keep your matches and conversations. Tap Unpause profile when you’re ready to come back.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, go to Settings → Delete account, and confirm with a code we text you or by signing in again with Google or Apple. You can also do it at amaradating.com/account/delete with a code texted to your number; if your account has no phone number, delete it in the app or send us a request from the email address on your account. You’re hidden and signed out straight away. If you sign back in within 30 days, your account is restored; after 30 days it is permanently erased. Plans billed by us stop renewing when you delete your account. Plans from the App Store or Google Play must be cancelled there, so cancel yours in the store first.

My account was restricted, suspended or banned. Can I appeal?

Yes, once for each decision. If you’re suspended or banned, you’ll see the option to appeal when you try to sign in. If your account is restricted, you’ll find it in Settings → Account status. Tell us briefly why you think we got it wrong. A different member of our team reviews your appeal, and if we overturn the decision, we lift it and let you know.

Privacy

Can other people see where I live?

No. The app asks only for your approximate location and rounds it to about 1 kilometre before it leaves your phone, and other members only ever see a distance in whole kilometres. Your phone number, email and date of birth are never shown on your profile; people see your age instead. We also remove location data hidden in your photos.

How do I get a copy of my data?

In the app, go to Settings → Download my data. You’ll get a file with your account, profile, signed-in devices, matches and messages, notifications and purchases. For any other request about your data, write to our Data Protection Officer.

Who can read my messages?

Only you and your match. Our moderation team sees a conversation only if it has been reported or flagged by our safety checks. When a conversation ends, its messages are deleted after 30 days, unless they are needed as evidence in a report.

Do you sell my data or show ads?

No. We don’t sell your personal data, we don’t share it with advertisers, and there are no ads in Amara. Our website uses analytics cookies only if you agree to them. Read our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy for the details.
